Manual roll calls waste 10% of every lecture. Paper attendance registers produce data that is late, inaccurate, and impossible to audit. And proxy attendance — where one student marks attendance for another — is a problem that cards, PINs, and apps simply cannot solve.
Smart Rollcall is Fortuna’s biometric classroom attendance system built specifically for educational institutions. The professor carries a handheld, battery-operated fingerprint device to each class. The professor initiates the session, students scan their biometrics in under 2 seconds each, and the moment the session ends, all attendance data syncs to a central server — available instantly to administrators, teachers, students, and parents. No paper. No proxy. No delays.
Deployed at IIT Bombay, IIT Roorkee, and educational institutions across India.
Trusted by India’s leading security teams
Attendance management in educational institutions has barely changed in decades. A professor calls out names. Students respond. Someone marks a register. That register eventually reaches the administrative office — hours, sometimes days, later. And the data it contains is only as accurate as the person who filled it in.
The real cost is not just administrative inefficiency. It is the problems this system cannot prevent. Proxy attendance — where students mark present for absent classmates — is widespread in colleges and universities, and paper-based systems have no mechanism to detect or stop it. Institutions that rely on manual roll calls report proxy rates as high as 15–25% in large lecture halls. The attendance data that reaches the administration is fundamentally unreliable.
Then there is the time cost. A manual roll call in a class of 60 students takes 5–7 minutes. Across five or six lectures per day, that is 30–40 minutes of instructional time lost — every single day, for every batch. Over a semester, this amounts to dozens of lost teaching hours per classroom. A biometric attendance system for students solves both problems simultaneously. When every attendance record requires a unique fingerprint or a face scan — verified against an enrolled database and synced to a central server in real time — proxy becomes physically impossible and roll call time drops from minutes to seconds.
Built for every stakeholder
Smart Rollcall is used by four roles in every institution — each with different priorities and a different relationship with attendance data.
You need reliable attendance data for academic policy enforcement, accreditation compliance, and student performance analysis. Smart Rollcall gives you a centralised dashboard showing real-time attendance percentages per class, per department, per batch, and per student — across every campus. Identify chronically absent students before it affects their grades. Generate audit-ready reports for regulatory bodies on demand.
Your job is to teach, not to take roll call. Smart Rollcall reduces attendance time from 5–7 minutes to under 60 seconds per class. Carry the handheld device to the classroom, punch in to start the session, pass it to students for fingerprint or facial recognition scanning, and punch out when the lecture ends. Attendance data uploads automatically — no register, no paperwork, no manual entry into ERP systems.
Smart Rollcall's handheld devices connect to the central server over Wi-Fi. Attendance data integrates with existing ERP systems via API or formatted export. No dedicated wall-mounted hardware installation is required per classroom — the device is portable and battery-operated. Minimal infrastructure. Maximum compatibility.
Smart Rollcall sends automated SMS notifications when a student is marked absent. Parents can also access their child's attendance history through a dedicated portal or the Smart Rollcall app — complete transparency without relying on the student's self-reporting.
Platform capabilities
Smart Rollcall is not a repurposed office attendance system fitted into a classroom. It is designed from the ground up for the specific constraints of educational environments — battery-operated, portable, professor-controlled, and built to handle the fingerprint quality or facial scanning changes of young students.
Traditional biometric attendance machines are wall-mounted, wired, and designed for a single fixed entrance. Classrooms do not have controlled entry points — they have doors that 60 students walk through in 30 seconds. Smart Rollcall uses handheld biometric devices — specifically Fortuna's MicroLOG Bio and iCON — that professors carry to the classroom. These devices store up to 3,000 fingerprint templates or up to 5,000 facial templates locally, operate for up to 6 hours on a single charge, and are built to survive drops from 1.5 metres.
Each student scans their fingerprint or face on the handheld device. Authentication takes under 2 seconds per student. In a class of 60 students, the entire roll call is complete in under 2 minutes — compared to 5–7 minutes for a manual name-call. The device uses capacitive fingerprint biometric sensors that work reliably across different skin types, including younger students whose fingerprint ridges are still developing.
The professor initiates the attendance session by scanning their own fingerprint or face scan. Only then does the device activate for student scanning. All device controls remain locked until the professor punches out at the end of the lecture. Attendance can only be taken during an active, professor-supervised session — not before class, not after, and not without the professor present.
Unlike app-based attendance (spoofable with GPS mocking), card-based systems (cards can be shared), or manual roll calls (friends answer for absent students), fingerprint or face biometric authentication cannot be faked. A student must be physically present and scan their own biometric to be marked present. This single feature is the primary reason educational institutions switch to biometric attendance.
During examinations, accurate identification is critical. Smart Rollcall verifies every student's identity via fingerprint or face scan before they can sit for the exam — eliminating impersonation. Examination attendance records are stored separately and can be cross-referenced with regular attendance data for discrepancy detection.
The moment a professor ends the session and punches out, all attendance data from the handheld device syncs automatically to the central server over Wi-Fi. There is no manual upload step, no USB cable transfer, no end-of-day batch process. Attendance data is available in the dashboard within seconds of the session closing.
Administrators access a centralised web dashboard showing attendance data across every department, batch, class, and individual student. Generate reports by date range, by subject, by professor, or by student. Export in Excel or PDF for regulatory compliance, parent-teacher meetings, or internal academic reviews. Attendance percentage thresholds can be configured to flag at-risk students automatically.
When a student is marked absent, Smart Rollcall sends an automated SMS notification to the registered parent or guardian. Configurable per institution — notifications can trigger after every absence, after a threshold number of absences, or as a scheduled daily summary. This feature is particularly valued by schools and by parents of hostel-residing college students.
Smart Rollcall integrates with existing school and college ERP systems — pushing attendance data directly into the student information module. This eliminates the dual-entry problem where attendance is taken on one system and must be manually uploaded to another. Compatible with major education ERP platforms via API or formatted data export. The same integration engine that powers Fortuna's cloud-based attendance system.
Every stakeholder gets their own view. Students log in to check their own attendance history, percentage, and any flagged shortfalls. Professors see class-wise reports for every lecture they have conducted. Parents see their child's attendance record and absence history. All accessible via web browser or the Smart Rollcall app.

The attendance cycle
Five steps from professor punch-in to tamper-proof audit log — fully automated, no manual input at any stage.
The professor picks up the Smart Rollcall handheld biometric device — fully charged, lightweight, and pocket-sized. No wall-mounted hardware is installed in any classroom. The device stores up to 3,000 fingerprints or 5,000 face templates locally.
The professor scans their own fingerprint or face on the device to initiate the attendance session. This activates the device for student scanning and timestamps the session start. No student can start or stop a session.
The device is passed through the classroom. Each student places their finger on the sensor or scans their face — authentication takes under 2 seconds per student. For a class of 60, the entire process is complete in under 2 minutes. The device confirms each successful scan.
At the end of the lecture, the professor scans their biometric again to close the session. All device controls lock. The attendance record — every student who scanned, the time of each scan, and the session duration — is stored locally on the device.
Once the session closes and the device reconnects to Wi-Fi, all records upload automatically to the central server. Data appears in the admin dashboard immediately, triggers parent SMS alerts for absent students, and pushes into the institution's ERP system.
Industry coverage
Smart Rollcall is deployed across institution types with different class sizes, different academic structures, and different administrative requirements. The platform is the same. The configuration, rules, and reporting adapt to each environment.
Large lecture halls with 100+ students. Multiple departments, multiple campuses. Proxy rates of 15–25% in manual systems. Batch-wise enrollment, department-wise reporting, multi-campus server sync, and integration with university ERP and canteen management. No hardware installation needed in any classroom.
Younger students, smaller class sizes, parent communication priority. Smart Rollcall's automatic SMS notifications to parents for every absence make it the preferred system for schools. The fingerprint sensor is calibrated for younger fingerprints. The face recognition algorithm handles facial changes for students, and the rugged device design withstands daily handling by school-age children.
High student turnover, multiple batches per day, fee-linked attendance tracking. Smart Rollcall tracks attendance per batch, per subject, and per time slot — giving coaching institute owners data to identify students who are paying but not attending, or attending but not enrolled in a specific batch.
Identity verification is critical during examinations. Smart Rollcall verifies each candidate's fingerprint or face before they enter the examination hall — eliminating impersonation. Examination attendance data is stored separately and exportable for regulatory and university submission.
Government-funded skill development programmes require auditable attendance records for funding compliance. Smart Rollcall provides tamper-proof, biometric-verified attendance logs that meet regulatory audit requirements.
Smart Rollcall integrates with Fortuna's access control system for campuses that need both classroom attendance and door-level entry control. Hostels, labs, libraries, and restricted administrative areas can be secured independently while feeding into the same centralised dashboard.
